Fortified and Enriched
Underwater dolphin keyboards, perfumed tiger exhibits, playtime for polar bears—these were just a few of the topics discussed at the seventh annual International Conference on Environmental Enrichment (ICEE) hosted by the Wildlife Conservation Society during the first week of August. More that 500 people from 15 countries attended the ICEE to share innovations in enrichment techniques that promote physical and mental well-being for animals in zoos and other facilities. At the WCS zoos and aquarium in New York City, we are constantly seeking new ways to engage the wildlife in our care. And with giant watermelons to pounce on, logs full of live crickets to catch, Rockefeller Christmas-tree branches to climb on, and fish-sicles to lick when the weather is warm, our animals’ daily activities are changing all the time.
